Slutwalk Cape Town 2011 Written By Craig Prinsloo

The word “slut”, as derogatory as it may be, does something that very few words are capable of now a days. It promotes dialog and open conversation wherever and whenever the word arises.

Slutwalk originating in Canada due to the increase of rape victim blame, people where warned that their dress code directly impacted their chances of being raped, as though an open invitation was issued with the price tag.

When did a woman’s ability to express herself get taken away and censored due to the mindset of a few dirty minded individuals?

On the 20th of August 2011, passionate people took to the streets to protest the archaic belief that a woman regardless of age, religion or origin relinquishes her right to control and take ownership of her body, due to her dress code. People came out in full support in their sexiest lingerie and high heels, united and chanting phrases such as “a dress is not a yes” and “real men don’t rape”. One would think that woman would be the only ones taking to the streets, but men flocked in support, some braver than the ladies downing dresses, skirts and heels in some cases.

A mother turns to her blond haired blue eyed baby daughter and says, “here is where you start toy toying”. This simple statement as pure and innocent as it was, was one of the most powerful statements of the day. Here was a mother preparing her daughter to fight for what was right, believing in the mentality that one person can always make a difference.

On lookers watched in amazement as this crowd came marching through the streets of Green point, placards raised towards the heavens. The beauty of this walk was that it not only changed the lives of the participants, but also to the fortunate few that never knew what was going on, but took the time and asked.

At the end of the day, the point of the Slut walk was to raise awareness about a serious problem by promoting conversation, that leads towards education and inevitably action. Our country was forged by a brave few willing to stand up and speak out for what they believed in, my hope is that we never lose this ability to change the future for our children.
